Carnival has begun and many European and Latin-American countries have already started dancing with the rhythm of Samba, but there are some countries that instead of dancing samba, dress up and parade with the loud rhythm of the bells in order to exorcise the bad demons that affect the fertility of nature.
I love the weird and unusual festivals and I was so lucky when I accidentally attended the wacky Bell Roads festival in Thessaloniki. While I was enjoying my cappuccino in the seaside boulevard of Thessaloniki I heard a loud noise of bells and…… what a surprise…..the fantasmagorical parade of the bell-wearers was parading just in front of me!
It was the 3rd Annual Bell Roads Festival but I had never seen it before. I can admit I was really impressed.
More than 2500 bell wearers from Greece and abroad paraded from the White Tower till the Aristotelous Square . The entire city center of Thessaloniki was literally trembling from the impressive and loud rhythm of the bells.
The Bell ringers sent the bad spirits away and brought awe, smiles and excitement to people that were around.
