I know most people hate valentine’s day (including my boyfriend), but whether it’s valentine’s day or not, it’s always nice to receive or to give presents.
3 months ago I started decoupage courses and wanted to make something useful and cute for my boyfriend. So I came up with the idea of a romantic calendar and made one for me and one for him.
The decoupage technique is easy, fun and super creative. You can apply it on any surface.
What you’ll need:
Decoupage glue, a brush, scissors, patterned napkins, acrylic paints (dark and light color), medium grit sandpaper, matte varnish
How to:
Coat the surface with primer.
Apply the dark acrylic paint in the colors of your choice (I used antique rose on the one and antique green on the other). Allow to dry.
Rub a candle all over mdf surface. Remove bits of wax before next step.
Apply the light acrylic paint (I used ivory). Allow to dry.
Start your shabby chic process by going all over your object with medium grit sandpaper.
Cut out the parts you need from the napkin.
Divide the napkin by removing all the white layers. It is only the patterned top layer of the napkin you want to use.
Add decoupage glue on the surface you want to place the napkin.
Lay a piece of your cut napkin onto the area to which you applied the glue. Place carefully the pattern from top outward (pressing with your fingers) in order to avoid air bubbles.
Add a second layer of decoupage glue all over the napkin. Allow to dry.
Apply a coat of varnish to the entire wooden piece you are going to decoupage. Allow to dry.
Depending on the finish you want to give your project, you can use matte, satin or gloss varnish.
