Mysterious and Bizarre, Abandoned “Chicken Church” in Indonesia.

Have you ever seen a chicken-shaped church? Yes, a chicken church does exist!  It is located in the middle of a forest in Indonesia, near the Magelang fields.

Known by locals as Gereja Ayam (or Chicken Church), the unusual building is not really a church – nor was it built with the purpose of having the shape of a chicken. A 67-year-old man living in Jakarta, Daniel Alamsjah, claims to have built this unusual structure in 1990. According to him, the idea came from a divine vision that he had, in which God asked him to build a “prayer house” in the shape of a pigeon of peace atop a hill.

About 26 years ago, as he was walking through Mageland, where his wife’s family lived, he saw a landscape very similar to the one he had seen in his dream. After a night of prayers on the spot, Daniel decided that there, definitely, would be the ideal place. A few years later, he was able to buy the land of 3000 m² for the equivalent of R $ 600 and started his project with the help of about 30 residents. However, the work was never completed. To him, the house became known as a church because he was a Christian.

Every year the abandoned and unfinished building attracts hundreds of travelers, tourists and worshipers.

Inside, there are about 16 bedrooms (one with three bathrooms!),some of them without any lighting.

Underneath the giant Chicken Church are 12 unfinished chambers which have been used as secluded rooms to rehabilitate ‘children and drug addicts’.

Visitors need to take caution once they are inside because the long-abandoned building is very unstable.

I am impressed.
