Anthony Quinn Beach-Rhodes, Greece

The small bay of Anthony Quinn with crystal clear waters and rocky surroundings is one of the most beatifull beaches on the island of Rhodes.

Natural stone surfaces ideal for reclining under the sun, pine trees reaching down to the water’s edge, emerald green water – Anthony Quinn certainly showed impeccable taste when he fell in love with its miniature bay. The beach is known today by the actor’ s name ,since filming the Guns Of Navarone here. The original name thow is “Vagies Bay”After filming ‘The Guns of Navarone’ in Rhodes, the actor Anthony Quinn bought this isolated bay for a symbolic sum in order to create an international centre for artists and film-makers. However, the purchase was later annulled by the government for having failed to deliver the promised film studio or arts center.Though Quinn was not Greek, he became famous playing the Cretan Alexis Zorba in 1963’s film of Kazantzakis’ novel. Other Greek roles included portraying Aristotle Onassis in two separate films and taking on the role of the Greek god Zeus in the Hercules TV series.

The waters owe their deep emerald colour to the kush green vegetation which surrounds the beach. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes. It’s mostly popular with young people – especially Italians – since the sharp rocks both in and out of the water are not ideal for families with young children or elderly people.
There is a jetty for small craft to moor ,while many sailing boats drop anchor a litle farther out, beyond the swimmers.

The finest spot is the rock right in the centre of the beach, with room for just a few sun beds. At the top of the rocks you will find a canteen and a card-operated telephone.
This place is not for beach-parties but it’s perfect for relaxing.

The picturesque beach is very popular and tends to get crowded in the summer months, especially in July and August. I was there on August and it was so overcrowded that unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to swim there 🙁 but I really enjoyed the view…..the scenery is stunning! Anthony Quinn bay and beach is situated on the east coast of Rhodes, next to Ladiko-Vagies beach, 3km south from Faliraki and 15 kms from the town of Rhodes.
