Crossing the Path of the Olympian Gods-Mount Olympus, Greece

The Greek Gods made their home on Mt.Olympus. With 2917m high (9,570 ft), Mountain Olympos, lying on the border between Macedonia and Thessaly, near Thessaloniki, is not just the highest and most famous mountain in Greece, but also the legendary home of the ancient Greek gods and the site of the throne of Zeus who gathered the clouds and threw down thunder and lightning from the holy mountain.

Our trekking challenge began at 9.30 from Krania village and took us through forest paths and grassy uplands to 800m of the Mount Olympos.  The highest peak of Olympus is Mytikas  (2919 m) wich I hope to reach in future and like Zeus survey the world and enjoy views described as being ‘fit for the gods!’

Trecking path.

Crossing the path of Olympus from Krania has medium difficulty  and is suitable for hikers with no experience… like me 🙂 On the way up you’ll find a lot of water springs, so there’s no need to carry lots of water.

Tiny strawberries but really delicious …..yumm

If you have a closer look you will see 3 frogs stuck together…hmmm what were they doing….

Trekking the holy mountain Olympus is a journey through time and beautiful and serene scenery .

It normally takes  4 hours but some members got lost in the forest and found us only after an hour, among them was my friend too, she was really terrified believing that she will have to pass the night on the mountain

This hike is unique for its combination of the high mountain range with spectacular sea views.

I collected some healing herbs, named in Greek spathohorto.  In places where it grows, people collect it and place it in jars of olive oil for several days; the result is a balm used for burns, cuts etc.   The healing properties of this plant’s oil have been admired and respected since ancient times, it  was extensively used by the ancient Spartans for treating wounds caused by swords.

After the 5 hours walking I was very happy to see this sign….finally we were close to the Old Agios Pandeleimonas.

Old Agios Pandeleimonas

The walk ended in Old Agios Pandeleimonas, a tiny picturesque village  at the foot of Mt. Olympus popular for it’s tavernas

.

The mountain of the gods gave us special moments, unique images and emotions!
