I have explored the most fantastic remote, isolated and secluded houses around the globe.

1. Solvay hut

At a height of 4,003 meters on a rocky ridge of the Matterhorn, Switzerland‘s iconic, triangular peak, is the Solvay hut, managed by the Swiss Alpine Club. It has room for only ten daredevils who will have to venture uphill through the most inhospitable terrain. The steep, icy paths and frozen breath and sweat will improve your appetite considerably.

3. Hermitage of San Colombano.

As you drive for the first time over the Passo Pian delle Fugazze in Italy, between Vivenza and Rovereto, you are due for something of a surprise. The Leno valley of the Trento province is home to the Hermitage of San Colombano. You would expect a hermitage to be somewhat off the beaten track, but this takes isolation to a new height – literally.

One hundred and twenty meters up a cliff face, seemingly carved into the side of the deep valley, the Hermitage is in clear view. Yet it also sends a clear message that it was built for a specific reason – to move its inhabitants far from the madding crown below. The house was built almost seven hundred years ago, in 1319.

5. Meteora, Thessaly, Greece

The Holy Trinity Monastery of Meteora that rest s atop awe-inspiring peaks that ascend to the sky hovering over the town of Kalambaka, is an Orthodox Monastery in central Greece.  Believed to have been inhabited by hermits as early as the 11th century, the rock formations were chosen as the location of a series of 21 gravity-defying Byzantine monasteries.
The monastery is one of six functioning monasteries in Meteora. It is the oldest among those present there, having been built in 1476. This monastery sits on a 400 m. (1,300 ft.) high rock.

In the old days, access to this monastery was via a net and rope ladder. Today, entrance to the monastery is gained by climbing 140 steps cut into the pinnacle rock. It was richly decorated and had precious manuscripts; however, these treasures were looted during World War II.

6. Mount Athos

Mount Athos, located on a peninsula in Greece is considered to be the most sacred place on Earth and is  home to 20 all-male monasteries. There is a strict prohibition on entry for women, called Avaton.
Simonos Petras monastery was founded in 1257 more than 800 feet above the Aegean Sea. It is one of 20 monasteries on the steep-sloped Greek peninsula of Mount Athos

7. Stockholm, Sweden

This amazing residence stands on the highest site of a mesmerizing island located several miles away from Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching out in an area of 137 square meters, the main building includes a beautiful living room, a guest room, with a kitchen and glass doors leading out to large a bridge deck, a sauna and much more. But more important, you won’t be disturbed by neighbors!

8. Katskhi Pillar Church, Georgia

The Katskhi Pillar, located in the country of Georgia, deep in the Caucasus region, where Western Asia and Eastern Europe meet, the small country of Georgia has a number of surprises. Not least is the Katskhi Pillar, a 130 feet high limestone monolith. Even more surprising than the monolith itself, however, is the fact that there is a church on its apex.
A Georgian monk has been living in it for nearly 20 years; the high church is estimated to have been built sometime between the 6th and 8th centuries and it is believed to actually have pagan roots, as a symbol of fertility to some forgotten god
In the 4th century, Georgia adopted Christianity as its state religion, and Katskhi Pillar became the site of a small church . It is also interesting that women are not allowed to climb to the top

It is not known how the pagans who built the temple carried the materials up the steep pillar without large cranes that are used today.

9. Elliðaey near Vestmannaeyjar

This enchanting house is located on an island called Elliðaey near Vestmannaeyjar, a small archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. In 2000 the house was given to singer, Bjork from her motherland as a “Thank You” for putting Iceland on the international map.

10. Just Room Enough Island

Tired of those pesky neigbors? Here’s the solution! The aptly-named Just Room Enough Island in Canada’s Saint Lawrence River has just enough room for a single small house. When the water is low, the owners can put their lawn furniture out on the porch and get some sun.

11. The Deep Valley of the Mills . Sorrento.

The Deep Valley of the Mills in Sorrento is an extraordinary site. This narrow gorge gets its name from the wheat-grinding mill that once functioned here. A saw mill was attached and a public wash-house used by the women of Sorrento. The mill became isolated from the sea during the 19th Century and the resulting rise in humidity made the area unbearable and so it was abandoned. The new climate was idea for vegetation, particularly for the fern family which thrive here. Entrance is near the Stragazzi parking area but the best view of the valley is from Via Fuorimura.

12. Yuanyang Rice fields China

Yuanyang Country is renowned for its rice terraces, sculpted by bare hands by the Hani people one thousand years ago, transforming a barren valley into a humid Eden; perfect for rice crops. It is a self sustaining ecosystem and a perfect example of a symbiosis with nature.

    • Whoah, I love that Swiss hut on the Matterhorn! Looking at the Matterhorn it's easy to believe how steep and inhospitable that place must be to get to, let alone to sleep in! Wow. How do you find this stuff out!?
